Frank Giannola, Indian Lake
State Park Manager, said the state owned
harvester was on Indian Lake through the end of
August. "We usually get the harvester
twice each season but we only will have it once
this season since it was broken earlier in the
season." Frank said this particular piece
of equipment is designed to harvest lilly pads
and is not as effective on the
Eurasian
watermilfoil and coontail which has been
growing in the lake this season.
The Indian Lake
Watershed Project (ILWP) announced a fund
raising campaign during their annual recognition
banquet last week to raise funds to purchase a
harvester that can be used exclusively at Indian
Lake and will be able to harvest the Eurasian
watermilfoil and coontail as well as the
water lillies. If you, your business, or
your organization would like to become a member
of ILWP
fill out the membership formand mail with your check
for $10.00 to ILWP, 324 C.R. 11, Bellefontaine,
Ohio 43311. For more information about
donating to the purchase of the harvester go to

What can be done about the
plant growth at Indian Lake?
Frank Giannola, Indian Lake
State Park Manager, spoke candidly with
www.IndianLakeArea.com regarding the
infusion of plant growth at Indian Lake. When
asked to compare the problems at Grand Lake St.
Marys with the plant growth at Indian Lake,
Giannola said, “We do not have the water quality
algae toxin problem at Indian Lake. We have the
complete opposite, good quality clean water.
The water quality is so good we are getting an
infusion of sub-aquatic plants.” What can be
done?

Mute Swans Raise Concern
Since 2005 a pair of mute swans
have been taking up residence in the Long Island
area of Indian Lake. It is unknown by what
means they came to be at Indian Lake. It is
illegal to place animals in Indian Lake, but
this appears to be what has happened. Please
take note: Although these animals are beautiful
to watch, they can create problems and conflicts
with humans and other wildlife.
